138 - Hamburger Hijinks - part 1

For
those that are interested in such things, this is a story that I
originally wrote for a comic strip in my student newspaper in 1998. I am secretly
hoping that someone will contact me and accuse me of stealing the
story, and then I will be able to smugly point out that it can't really be considered stealing since I was the
one who originally wrote it.
Idiot.

I think this is unlikely to happen.

I have
booked my table for the UK Webcomix Thing
in March next year, and I am already a little excited. Ok, I'm not
really, but I am vaguely pleased with the description I wrote of myself
on the exhibitors
page
which is more or less the same thing. I have somewhat
unwisely claimed that I am going to have a book ready to sell in time
for the event; let us hope that this is not my undoing.

EDIT: Oh! The imagination shirts have gone on preorder! BUY BUY BUY! If last time is anything to go by the shirts will be available to preorder until mid January and will arrive some time in february. I know it's a long way off, but think how cool you will look in february! Woo!

(boys shirts are in inspirational orange, and girls are in fanciful frost pink. The colours!)

Will any of the unacknowledged internet readers not within commuting range of London be able to get their eager hands on one of the (hopefully!) first ever collected Beaver and Steve book?

(12.12.05 10:51)
Yes! It will also somehow be sold through the magic of the internet, but if you buy it from me at the THING I will probably draw a picture inside the front cover, mess it up, and dramatically reduce the resale value of the book. Woo!

(12.12.05 10:54)
I love Steve's salute. And the way dodgy boss's hat hovers over his head...

(12.12.05 10:55)
Great spotty little kid!
Must get myself one of them there t-shirts at some point...

(12.12.05 11:11)
I have ordered the Imagination Shirt as I am looking uber cool today wearing that 'meat' shirt Again Although it is quite possible that it will soon become a people-repellant if I don't ever take it off!

(12.12.05 11:26)
See, I love the orange imagination shirt, rather than the pink. But I'd imagine the small bloke shirt would be much bigger than the one size girlie shirt. Poo.

(12.12.05 11:34)
pan - sorry, but for some reason our shirt suppliers don't make girl's shirts in orange. I guess orange is just too manly a colour for girls.
OJ - if you wear it long enough it will probably start to smell of MEAT too.

(12.12.05 11:42)
Orange is a great colour! The colour of the inside of jaffa cakes! (nyom). I think I'll order the bloke version anyway and then wash it at about 200 degrees. Yay!

Katherine (12.12.05 12:19)
WOOO! I shall be at the show buying your books!

(12.12.05 12:42)
HA HA! I ordered a shirt! I like forst pink.

(12.12.05 12:43)
Haha! LOVE IT!

(12.12.05 12:44)
Though now I REALLY want a blood milkshake.

(12.12.05 13:33)
Ow! A cliffhanger!

(12.12.05 13:36)
Ooh! I could totally spoil the ending for everyone. Go Boxy and Elvis!

(12.12.05 13:49)
How has no-one else mentioned that Beaver and Steve are working at WIMPY? Oh, heavens - this is the happiest day of my life. But then, hang on - Wimpy isn't a fast food joint. And the management at Wimpy are of the highest moral standard. Fraud! Unless, of course, it's one of the RUBBISH pseudo-Wimpies that you find at certain bowling alleys. Yes, that must be it.

Great light effect on the torch, too.

(12.12.05 13:59)
I was waiting for you to spot that. I knew that the fast food suggestion would cause controversy, but I think it would be hard to explain the concept of burgers served on plates with knives and forks to those readers not lucky enough to ever have encountered a Wimpy before. This episode marks stage one in my plan to establish the fact that Beaver and Steve actually live in New Malden. There may not be a stage 2.

(12.12.05 14:01)
Wow. This is the best thing ever. Baboon, you have saved my Monday.

(12.12.05 14:11)
Burger based bloggs are always to be encouraged. Well done.

(12.12.05 14:21)
Ah, another wimpy appreciator! Hurrah!

(12.12.05 14:34)
Oh so it is! I've just had to squint very closely. Score one for New Malden.

(12.12.05 14:35)
I wait for the day that Beaver and Steve make a guest appearance in downtown Switzerland.

(12.12.05 20:59)
Are the prices in US dollars?

(12.12.05 21:18)
They are! The shirts are being printed in the US because it's cheaper and most of my readers live out there. Here's hoping the dollar crashes in value so the shirts get even cheaper!

(12.12.05 21:25)
So, do I take it that Steve and Beaver aren't coming to Switzerland? The franc is very ummmm...stablish or something.

(12.12.05 21:34)
*reliefed*. I though for a sec they were in pounds and I was all, argh, that's fifty Australian dollars. Go the US and it's weaker currency!

(12.12.05 22:03)
I thought that the customer was actually based on the blogger New Malden. Look at the excitement on his face, realising that there is a Wimpy Burger joint. The hair is the right colour as well

ninjaMog (13.12.05 10:11)
Yay! A T-shirt in my favouritest color (orange) for my favouritest webcomic. In the spirit of the comic, I made a -PREORDER- Sound as I clicked that checkout button!
*gleeeee*

Snag (13.12.05 12:16)
Seņor Boon, I humbly salute you and congratulate you upon your growing empire. Go t-shirts! Go book at the THING! This is indeed happy news.

What software do you use for the strip btw? And also, have I asked this before? My memory's almost all gone now. *sigh* Wha?

(13.12.05 12:22)
Hold your horses there Snags- the book is not even begun yet, and the shirts may not sell at all, so please save any congratulations until after I have not failed miserably.

The strip is drawn with pens and stuff then scanned in and coloured in photoshop. I have no idea if you have asked before: my memory is also very poor. What was the question?

(13.12.05 13:51)
I like this story! You're good at this!
Have you seen loolita anywhere?

Snag (13.12.05 13:59)
Ah... scanner eh? Mm...

blech. no attention-span at all today. can't work. I think it's because I wore different shoes.

(13.12.05 14:30)
LOL
Your characters point a lot when they talk.
I just noticed.

(13.12.05 14:32)
I realised that after I drew it. I think I overuse that pose. And the little sticking out lips mouth thing too.

(13.12.05 16:37)
chaotic - yes, I thought it might vaguely be based on me too. I certainly do have a t-shirt like that, and the arms are about right.

I'm not spotty, though.

(13.12.05 16:40)
Don't worry - this was not my discreet way of telling you that you need to improve your skin care regime. If it had been based on you I would have made him much taller and more wistful-looking.

(13.12.05 17:14)
As you continue to ignore me, I'm assuming that Beaver and Steve won't be including Switzerland in their plans for world domination of comics and burgers - I fail to understand this.

(13.12.05 17:21)
It's not so much that I am haughtily snubbing your comments (for once), but rather that I have so far been unable to construct a witty response that will make me look at once both big and clever. As soon as such a reply forms itself in my mind you will be the first to know, but I warn you now it will almost certainly be about cuckoo clocks and/or pen knives.

(13.12.05 17:54)
there's always the chocolate option too Mr B.

(13.12.05 17:56)
That's already been taken as my fallback position for belgium.

(13.12.05 18:30)
Nazi Gold!

(13.12.05 18:32)
Good answer. This seems to be turning into a round of family fortunes...

the_minotaur (15.12.05 16:22)
hmmm, ok strip. not as good as Elvis and Boxy though....

(15.12.05 16:26)
You prefered the geometric characters?
